I wanted to title this topic ‘doing things my own way,’ but I looked back and asked myself why I did it.
I did it because others were doing it, hoping to reach my destination by following them.
Let me start by describing what I did.
I was coming back from Be Still ( A bible study group that is now for seeking God’s heart), and we worship and adore him. It was excellent because he spoke to me about focusing on Him rather than looking at the problem which is what i needed because things are now changing for me that makes me feel like the ground was shaking. It’s funny I always say God is my solid rock on which I stand in some form or shape i must have walked away from him. Anyhow going back to the what happened!
I was driving home and was less than five minutes away when I saw a diversion sign. It was clear and straightforward, with no confusion. The sign wasn’t there when I left home, which means it was put up recently, indicating roadworks that would require me to take a different route. However, I chose to ignore the sign and follow the car ahead, thinking they must know something I don’t , even though I clearly saw the sign that read “Road closed ahead.”
Yes, I followed the nice, pretty car ahead of me, seeing the signs clearly and choosing to follow other people.
When I saw the sign and made the decision to follow the car ahead, I knew I was about to make a mistake, but I still followed the car, hoping for a different story from what was clearly presented in front of my eyes with my glasses on. After reaching the junction the car ahead , turned right and used the junction to town around back to the direction we both came from and behind I saw a different car making the same mistake I did which brought the bible verse. “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:14)
I preferred the easy, familiar, and comfortable road, and I did not want to take the difficult route I was unfamiliar with to get home.
A good friend and I went hiking, and we decided to climb the hills, which were composed of rock, pebbles, and grass, rather than follow the path that had been carved out. This decision resulted in us being even more exhausted, with our knees and hands slightly sore.
If we had to explore more about which way to take to reach the top of the hill, we might still feel tired, but our bodies would not have returned sore and bruised. However, the truth is we did not ask or seek, so we did not find. Sometimes, we want to reach our desired destinations by taking shortcuts, without asking, seeking God, or knocking.
I have always wondered why it does not start with Seek, Knock, or Ask first—perhaps asking God for our heart’s desires, requesting the Holy Spirit to reveal hidden things, and then seeking God’s face might be the right approach. I would love someone to explain the knock aspect of things to me in more detail.
I don’t know about you, but God is truly faithful and loving. When I stray and go my own way, he never abandons me and always guides me back with open arms. This process can sometimes cause a delay in reaching your destination. As it says in his word, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).
Thank you, God, for giving us Your Son, Jesus, and not leaving us as orphans, but sending us the Holy Spirit, who teaches us all things in Jesus’ name.
Give your life to Jesus Christ. He is waiting for you with open arms.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 12:28-30)”
