Present what you have to Jesus:
John 6: 5- 8 (NIV):
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, ‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, ‘It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!’
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many? ‘
I have a notebook of questions I would like to ask Jesus. When reading this chapter of the Bible, I instantly wondered why Jesus wanted to test Philip. What was the purpose of Jesus testing Philip?
I asked the Holy Spirit. I wanted to know what Jesus was thinking. Who better to ask than the Holy Spirit and an image of David and Goliath?
When the Israelites saw Goliath, they were dismayed and terrified. When Jesus asked Philip if he would feed the crowd approaching him, Philip was probably shocked. He asked why his master was asking him this question.
King Saul and Philip shared that they both went toward money. Saul offered money, and Philip discussed the lack of funds.
Philip had Jesus, who turned water into wine. He had Jesus, who taught Nicodemus. They had Jesus, whom John testified about. He healed the official’s son. Jesus healed the thirty-eight-year-old paralysed man. Philip saw Jesus do all the miracles, and he still saw the problem and went straight to what they lacked by saying, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite”, not even a fill but a bite.
To be honest, I should not compare Philip with Saul. The Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul. Nonetheless, the Israelite still focused on Goliath. They did this instead of focusing on the creator of the world, who is bigger and more powerful.
Everything came back to this question. Why do we not bring what we have to God? Why do we not bring what we don’t have to God?
Philip did not forget that Jesus was talking to him, nor did the men of Israel for God when Goliath appeared; we just sometimes focus 99% of our sight on the problem and give 1% to God.
Why do we forget what the Lord has done when trouble comes our way?
Why do we tremble and be dismayed by our problems rather than look at the father and let the problem tremble at the father’s feet?
I wish I could draw an illustration because, in my head, I see people looking at a Goliath problem. They focus so much on it that they forget that our God is humongous. Matthew 5:35 says, “Or by the earth, for it is his footstool.”
I think I should have made the title Present what you have and don’t have to the lord.” Still, even if we believe that we do not have anything worth giving to another human, we should never project that idea onto God because it says in his word in Romans 12:1; Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and please to God. And in Deuteronomy 6:5, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Jesus repeated it to the Pharisees in Matthew 22:37: ” Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
To be honest, I think I still have a long way to go to have faith like Daniel and David, where troubles come, and I go to my knees to thank God.
All I have is me, and all of me comes from God, so I want to love the Lord my God with all my heart, with all my Soul, with all my heart and with all my Mind.
But every day is a battle, and sometimes I fail when I use my own power and wisdom but I still go back to my father and than him.
